Guayule is an alternative crop for farmers in arid regions of North America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Australia. Yulex’s proprietary guayule germplasm is currently grown as a robust industrial crop in water restricted regions in central Arizona, taking the place of cotton, alfalfa and sorghum. As a desert shrub native to the US Southwest this unique crop is seen as one of the best candidates for converting fallow farmland to productive farmland.

Yulex Guayule is grown as a perennial crop, an agricultural strategy that reduces soil erosion and serves as a highly effective dust control tool. Yulex guayule is harvested year-round after an initial maturation period of 18-24-months and a single crop can be harvested annually year after year for up to five seasons.

Yulex’s crops require lower annual nutrient inputs and significantly less water when compared to more traditional crops on an annualized basis. Drip irrigation practices further reduce water needs and assist in propagating an excellent and vigorous crop stand. Yulex Guayule can be grown as a feedstock for bioprocessing whereby rubber, resin, wax and oils are extracted, as a solid biofuel for combustion energy, as a precursor to liquid fuels or as a fiber crop used in engineered wood-fiber products.

Growth Cycles

Guayule matures for harvest within 12-20 months, depending on the specific variety that is planted. Its subsequent re-growth can be harvested annually, producing high quality emulsions. High agronomic yields have been achieved through natural breeding and enhanced by best practices in cultivation developed by Yulex. Since guayule is a perennial crop, little effort in planting, cultivating or harvesting is required compared to other crops. Also, the guayule plant produces terpene resins, which are natural pesticides, so it is resistant to many pests.
