Patagonia Yulex R2 Wetsuit Available Now

PHOENIX, AZ, December 5, 2013 – Yulex Corporation, an agricultural-based biomaterials company, announced today that the Patagonia Yulex first plant-based wetsuit is available now through Patagonia in limited-edition quantities online and in specific surf shops.

The Patagonia Yulex R2 Front-Zip suits offer the first alternative to a traditional neoprene wetsuit. Made from the guayule plant, the suit matches a traditional Patagonia wetsuit in technical performance yet is significantly more environmentally-friendly than a traditional wetsuit.

“Together with Patagonia, we hope that the wider use of guayule will decrease the production of the traditional fossil fuel based neoprene wetsuit,” said Jeffrey Martin, co-founder, CEO and president of Yulex Corporation.

Guayule is a sustainable, industrial crop that does not compete with food or fiber crops and requires very low inputs. The plant-based process used to produce guayule rubber is much less toxic than the chemically intensive manufacturing process required to produce traditional neoprene.

Prior to now, this suit was only offered in Japan. Quantities are limited.

Development of the next generation of the Yulex wetsuit is underway.

Retail store locations where the Yulex suit is offered:
Patagonia Cardiff / CA
Patagonia Bowery / NYC
Patagonia Santa Monica / CA
Fletcher Chouinard Designs, Ventura CA
All global Patagonia Surf retail locations

The price is $479 – same price as the Patagonia R2 non-Yulex wetsuit.
