About Latex Allergy
Tropical latex allergy affects an estimated 10 to 17% percent
of health care workers. The very latex that was used to protect
these workers from killer viruses like AIDS has been identified
as the cause of death in at least 17 cases since 1989, according
to FDA statistics.
As an occupational disease, latex sensitization starts on the
job, but its effects follow sufferers everywhere that tropical
latex products are found.
Unfortunately for some people who live with latex allergy, it
can result in sensitization to a multitude of other products containing
similar tropical proteins such as bananas, kiwis, avocados, chestnuts,
potatoes and melons.

Over 20 million Americans have developed sensitivities to tropical
rubber latex.

Living with Latex Allergy
Latex allergies are high among children born with spina bifida
or who are generally exposed to frequent contacts with latex as
a result of their ongoing medical treatments. For example, a child
born with a mild case of spina bifida was not diagnosed with latex
allergy until her teens. By then, she had lived with the allergy
undiagnosed for several years wearing latex rubber bands in her
braces that continually made her sick. In addition, her frequent
visits to the orthodontist, where dental dams and gloves were
made with latex, regularly left her with painful hives in her
mouth. Even after her diagnosis, the airborne nature of the latex
particles from latex balloons released during a church choir performance
caused her to go into an anaphylactic shock that left untreated
could have caused death.
